The first half hour went really slowly and I thought I would never last the course, then suddenly I was hooked! If you are pro-war see this and it will make you realise the futility of it all. If you are anti-war this will reinforce your views.

The acting was great and the kids were superb. I came away thinking very deeply about the war and about what we DON'T know about it all. I imagine there are hundreds of soldiers who come home damaged and totally unable to tell their stories. We need to hear more of the atrocities and stop what is going on.

A very sad film, but thought-provoking and a must-see!

A touching story of family, love and the effects of war.

Agree with Tracy Butler in terms of the acting for the film particularly Toby Maguire and Natalie Portman. The first hour I felt though was a bit slow. I thought it was compentently acted by the two and Jake Gyllenhaal but I never really felt the powerful emotions of love and upset between the family not deeply enough though there were some good scenes in there particularly the estranged relationship with Gyllenhaal's character Tommy and there dad played well by Clifton Collins Jr.

Originally I was only going to give this a three star but in the last forty minutes when Maguires character Cahill comes back from the war, he has deep pyschological scars. That was when things changed and I upped it to a four. The acting became better and where I saw some touching and powerful scenes. One where Cahill and family with his two daughters are sitting at the table and one of them was misbehaving was tense. Maguire'e eyes had a deep haunted look and this is where I felt him and Portman's acting was really real.

In the end this a great film to watch and makes you think about what those families are going through. Well worth seeing this.
