What´s the plot?
Debut film from artist Sam Taylor-Wood, ‘Nowhere Boy’ charts the formative years of John Lennon.

From the age of five John is raised by his straight and respectable Aunt Mimi. But when he meets his mother, Julia, they form an instant bond. Then, when Julia takes him to see an Elvis film at the local cinema, John becomes a convert to rock'n'roll.

As the relationship between Mimi and Julia becomes fraught, John seeks refuge in his music and soon meets kindred spirit, Paul McCartney. But just as he sets out on his new life and begins to find his true voice, tragedy strikes.

The wife and I much enjoyed the film. Good throwback to the 50s era with the music and lifestyles etc. The sex isn't that strong and the language, Liverpudlian of course is very tame compared with Looking for Eric! And yes we enjoyed the acting, the humour, irony, the music, and the photography. See and enjoy! PS to filmaker; can we see the cast details before all the other credits?

This excellent film is one of the most beautifully crafted that I have seen in a very long time. The casting is perfect, the acting sensitive with character portrayal par excellence, and the photographic imagery cannot be faulted. I highly recommend this film to anyone whether they have prior knowledge of the subject or not. Enjoy!

The Guardian criticizes this film for not explaining to us what created John Lennon the genius. Which just goes to show that movie critics are not like other people, if they are at all human. To me, Sam Taylor Wood creates a very emotional story about a troubled young man and his very confusing relationship to women. There is - apart from a very few, subtle clips and lines - almost no reference to The Beatles in the movie, which must have been very tempting, but which is an important part of why the film succeeds, in my view. This is not a movie about John the Beatle. Anne-Marie Duff is great in a difficult role, and Thomas Sangster is a brilliant little Paul. And the music? Well, with the material at hand, it would be shocking if it wasnt perfect.
