Atmospheric & Compelling
In Bel Ami I found myself totally believing in him as the dissolute, avaricious and manipulative former soldier of de Maupassant's novella, whose good fortune puts him in the way of people who can further his towering ambition, but whose lack of education means that he can only sustain it by using and abusing those around him. He uses his good looks to manipulate the women in his life, who, in turn, use their wiles to get what he wants from their husbands. He sells his soul for position and wealth, and, as a result, loses the only woman he truly cares for. But nothing will stop him getting what he wants, not even a broken heart.
I have to say, Rob sold it brilliantly, and his co-stars were equally mesmerising, especially Christina Ricci, who perfectly captured the coquettishness and ultimate vulnerability of Clotilde.
A real step up for Rob, and I'm really looking forward to seeing him in Cosmopolis.
Realism in France
Even my husband enjoyed it!
Had read a lot of criticism of Robert Pattinson, but found him to play the part very well. All the women were excellent and the film had some quite funny moments.
Costumes and sets were beautiful and there's a nice twist at the end.
All in all an enjoyable experience!
