Based on Isherwood's sublime prose by the same name, A Single Man follows George through his life after his partner, Jim's, death. Colin Firth plays George emotionally - his acting showing all the hauntedness of a bereft soul like the voice of Johnny Cash emotes a haunting of its own - together with his close friend Charley (played by Julianne Moore) who is somewhat in love with George. Tom Ford directs his first feature film well, with beautiful moments of cinematography from start to finish. The film is not just about gayness, but more about coping and getting on with life. Child-actor and Skins star Nicholas Hoult plays Kenny Porter, a student in love with George. Despite George's pick of relations - Kenny or Charley - he chooses instead to remain on his own, but lets them in from time to time. The film explores love lost, wrong decisions, and the line between platonic friendship and attraction. The soundtrack by Abel Korzeniowski is beautiful and captures George's grace and demise, and the acting is second-to-none. A brilliant film with a little something for everyone in it.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever....

This film is beautiful, sumptuous and majestic; it is a feast for the senses, and although it will not appeal to those who are looking for something fast-paced or action-packed, it is deals with issue that most will be able to relate to such as grief and the ways in which people relate to one another and the world. It is not simply vapidly pretty, its exquisiteness is functional and forms the crux of the film: the beauty of life is revealed to George, the central character, precisely because he has given up on living.
