Started well and reminded me of William Goldings' novel The Inheritors. Unfortunately did not live up to the potential storyline and had to rely on visual effects to carry it through

I was undecided whether to give this film a two or three star rating. In the end I went for three stars. We went to see this film as a family, and I had been expecting great things as this director has produced some fantastic films previously, great entertainment, pretty good acting and fantastic special effects.
The story was an old one, but then it was set a very long time ago! It was a story about slavery and oppression, one of the oldest stories but still one of the most topical. Coupled with the promised special effects, this should have been one of Emmerich's most memorable films. But the special effects never really seemed to deliver and the acting, though very good in parts, never really made me feel overly sympathetic to any of the characters. The search for D'Leh's father ended in a bit of anti-climax and surely there was more scope for the sabre-toothed tiger. We were expecting it join in the battle at the end of the film! But - the children really enjoyed it, loved watching the scenes with the mammoths, were impressed by the giant birds - this was why I was generous and gave it three stars.
This is no "2001 Space Odyssey" or "Dances With Wolves". Do not compare it with these great films, it does not stand a chance compared with them.
