What a brilliant film, shown one night only at our local cinema to a full house. Missed a few lines because the film was so very amusing the audience were laughing so hard....But it was funny and tragic all rolled into one.
I think if you watched this film and didnt know who Ian Dury was then you would assume it was total fiction and in an almost comic horror genre too. Dury is sometimes a most grotesque spectacle, and at other times a handsome guy with a beautiful way. He certainly had no problems charming the ladies, but then again I think women quite like a loveable b*stard/rogue.
The film was a roller coaster of emotion, digging deep into the spectre of Dury's early years and how they had moulded the man he became. Determined to angrily shake off any sympathy towards his disability, but just as angrily to demand help where he couldnt manage himself.
Drug fuelled..sex fuelled...just like rock and roll should be.
Maybe they will dare to make a sequel to cover his latter years...I sort of hope they dont though.

Serkis triumphs

Good to see a biopic that doesn't airbrush out the faults of its subject. Andy Serkis does a remarkable job as Ian Dury, capturing his physical presence superbly; although I thought the "live performances" were a little too "music hall". Dury as I remember him was a bit more straight rock and roll.
But the personal world of his family life was nicely conveyed with excellent performances and was both touching and moving. All in all I really enjoyed it and I went fearing the worst, as I am a great fan of Dury's music.

If you want to watch the film as you are a Ray Winstone fan...dont bother.
I think you would only appreciate this film if you are a true supporter of Ian Dury.
