An Evening of one-act ballets on the music by Igor Stravinsky. The Firebird - a Russian folk tale in two scenes, the Right of Spring - a series of episodes depicting a wild pagan spring ritual and The Wedding - a ballet that goes through the entire story of a Russian peasant wedding.

Not only does this concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle open the new season, it also marks the start of an ambitious artistic project: the performance of all of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies by the end of 2011. With this series, the orchestra and its conductor pay tribute to two Mahler anniversaries: 7 July 2010 is the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth and 18 May 2011 will be the centenary of his death.

Eugene Onegin is an opera based on the novel in verse by Aleksandr Pushkin. It is a classic of Russian literature and its eponymous protagonist served as the model for a number of Russian literary heroes. The story concerns Eugene Onegin, a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman's (Tatiana's) love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with Lensky, his best friend.

'Il Trovatore', on the big screen in high defintion and Dolby digital sound, from the Gran Liceu Barcelona. The action is set in 15th century Spain during the civil war and the cast is lead by Marco Berti as Manrico, Roberto Frontalli at Conte di Luna and Fiorenza Cedolins as Leonora.

A never-before-seen high defintion restoration of a historic Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn 1966 performance of SWAN LAKE (Tchaikovsky) at the Vienna State Opera House. Choreographed by Rudolf Nureyev and conducted by John Lanchbery, with the Wiener Symphoniker orchestra. Nureyev and Fonteyn revolutionized the world of ballet by crossing the borders between classical ballet and modern dance.

Opening Night of the new Teatro Real season, live from Madrid. This satirical opera by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht was written in Germany during Hitler's rise to power. It is about social disintegration, where love is a commodity in a capitalist society built on and run by criminals, and where the greatest crime, punishable by death, is to be poor.

The opera Salome by Richard Strauss is infamous for both the potentially sensational ‘Dance of the Seven Veils’ and the macabre ending where Salome declares her love to the severed head of John the Baptist. This production from the Teatro Communale di Bologna stars Erika Sunnegardh as Salome with Mark Doss as Joahannan and Robert Brubaker as Herod.

See Plácido Domingo playing the lead in this production of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra from Teatro Alla Scala, Milan. Domingo, a star tenor for 50 years, transforms himself into a baritone for this role, and is conducted by Daniel Barenboim in a moving story of love and politics.
