Puccini, who always had a weakness for the latest technical gadgets, was also fascinated by the New World and the innovative potential it offered. It was inevitable that he would one day situate an opera on American soil. But despite Puccini’s yen for novelty, this ‘Wild West opera’ offers the standard three-way relationship of a woman caught between two men: one a charismatic criminal and the other a corrupt lawman. In a series of genre scenes dominated by a declamatory singing style, the composer sketches a picture of a rugged exterior and emotional depth. As the woman who manages to survive unscathed in a man’s world and the bandit-turned-good-guy ride off into the sunset, the opera ends like an authentic Hollywood film: the happy end as a symbol of the flight into illusion.
