In 1998, Florence's Maggio Musicale (one of Europe's most prestigious Summer Music Festivals and the eldest along with Salzburg, Bayreuth and Glyndebourne) offered a remarkably powerful production, directed by Lev Dodin with sets and costumes by David Borovsky.
