Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona - Il Trovatore
Giuseppe Verdi's 'Il trovatore' has a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano based on the Romantic drama El trovador (1836) by Antonio García Gutiérrez. It is the second in the so-called popular trilogy – the others being Rigoletto and La Traviata – which contributed so decisively to Verdi's fame.
The action is set in 15th century Spain during the civil war that opposed Count James of Urgell, the pretender to the Catalan-Aragonese crown following the death of King Martin 'the Human', to Ferdinand of Antequera of the House of Trastamara, who had been chosen as king under the Compromise of Caspe. The opera tells how Manrico the troubadour, a supporter of the Count of Urgell, clashes with the Conte di Luna, a member of the rival faction, for the love of Leonora, a lady of the court. Manrico has been brought up by a gypsy, Azucena, who claims to be his mother. The Conte di Luna imprisons both Azucena and Manrico and puts the latter to death. Azucena takes revenge by revealing that Manrico was in fact Di Luna's own brother and that she kidnapped him when he was a child to avenge the death of her mother, who had been burnt at the stake as a witch. Leonora, having failed to save Manrico, poisons herself.
The cast is lead by Marco Berti as Manrico, Roberto Frontalli at Conte di Luna and Fiorenza Cedolins as Leonora.
