Salome from Teatro Communale di Bologna
The opera Salome by Richard Strauss is famous , or perhaps more accurately infamous, for both the potentially sensational ‘Dance of the Seven Veils’ and the macabre ending where Salome declares her love to the severed head of John the Baptist. Based on the play by Oscar Wilde, it premiered in 1905 to international acclaim and is perceived as a bridge between the 19th century operas of Wagner and Verdi and the compositions of the 20th century. This production from the Teatro Communale di Bologna stars Erika Sunnegardh as Salome with Mark Doss as Joahannan and Robert Brubaker as Herod.
