Based on the life of Carlos, Prince of Asturias in 16th Century Spain, ‘Don Carlo’ follows the title character’s doomed romance to Elisabeth of Valois.
He was betrothed to her, but as part of a peace treaty it was ultimately decided that Elisabeth, the daughter of King Henry II of France, would have to marry Carlo’s father, King Philip II.
A tempest of love, ambition and intrigue swirls around the Spanish court in Verdi’s ‘Don Carlo’, here conducted by Zubin Mehta and featuring a cast including Fabio Sartori and Julianna Di Giacomo.
