In 1904 Japan, a navy officer has rented a house for himself and his new wife, ‘Madame Butterfly’. Unbeknownst to her, he plans to abandon her and return to America.
He’s married her for convenience, but because of the laxity of Japanese divorce laws, he intends to go home and find an American wife as soon as possible. And when he returns years later, it has tragic consequences for everyone.
One of the most enduringly popular of all operas, this new version of ‘Madame Butterfly’ is conducted by Riccardo Chailly and stars Maria Jose Siri as Butterfly.
