About this Film

Director John Michael McDonagh brings morbid humour to dark comedy drama 'Calvary', which focuses on a small-town priest who is harassed by the local parishioners.

Father James Lavelle is a priest in a small parish in the west of Ireland. Things are far from rosy for the well-meaning cleric who is frequently abused and tormented by the angry local residents. When one neighbour threatens his life in the confession box, the negative force of the community begins to close in around him.

'Calvary' stars Brendan Gleeson, Aidan Gillen and Chris O'Dowd.

Total Film - 5/5 Stars

Priest is the word

Over the course of two feature films apiece, the brothers McDonagh have had interestingly dovetailing careers. Martin was first out of the gate with modern masterpiece In Bruges, which was followed by John Michael’s debut The Guard, a fine effort albeit one arguably too in love with its own smartarse dialogue and colourful countryside saltiness.

Whilst I can understand why this film has received critical acclaim I found it a very turgid affair with a totally implausible plot. Disappointing...

Brilliant!

A must see movie. Superb acting esp. Bendan Gleeson and Chris O'Dowd. It stayed with me for a few days after seeing it. Great to see Chris O'Dowd palying a role like this.

Terrible

Acting is quite good but did not expect the horrifying ending. Not a film to see for a special night out!!
