About this Film

Oddball comedy drama 'Frank' centres on an avant-garde band trying to record new music under the leadership of their eccentric papier mache-headed front man Frank.

The 'Soronprfbs' are a far-out music group, led by the talented and potentially damaged Frank (Michael Fassbender), who permanently dons an oversized papier m'ché head. When their keyboardist attempts suicide, wannabe rock star Jon (Domhnall Gleeson) is called upon as a replacement, joining them in a remote cabin to work on their music. But with differing agendas and desires, tension soon ramps up between the band members.

Written by Lenny Abrahamson (What Richard Did), 'Frank' is loosely based on comedian Chris Sievey's character Frank Sidebottom.

Heading for stardom…

Growing up in a shitbird coastal town, wannabe keyboard player/songwriter Jon Burroughs (Domhnall Gleeson) finds his life taking off when touring avant-garde rock band Soronprfbs ask him to fill in at a gig (“Can you play C, F and G? You’re in!”). Next thing he knows, he’s off to Ireland to record an album, struggling to find his place in a makeshift family unit that includes manager Don (Scoot McNairy), who has a fetish for mannequins, and sour-faced theremin player Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal, terrific).

A brilliant script, based on Jon Ronson's (author of Psychopath Test, Man Who Stared at Goats) 'Frank' (I bought it immediately), raises the issues of being an outsider, having artistic blocks and societal pressures to be 'likeable'. Smashing.
