‘L’Amour De Loin’ (‘Love From Afar’) is the story of Jaufre, a knight who is weary of the pleasures of life and longs for a new kind of love.
He learns of a beautiful woman across the sea named Clemence, and dedicates himself to her. With the help of a pilgrim, who becomes a go-between for them, they begin to fall in love despite the distance that separates them.
Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s breakthrough opera debuted in 2000, and now ‘L’Amour De Loin’ appears at the Met for the first time, starring Eric Owens and Susanna Phillips.
Sung in French with English subtitles.
