Total Film Review 4/5 stars

Michael Fassbender finds the drugs don’t work…

In an industry dominated by sequels, adaptations and formulas, a thriller such as The Counsellor is sure to catch viewers by surprise. Some will warm to its oblique narrative, philosophy-loaded monologues, thick atmosphere, strong character bias and jolting, merciless violence; others will spill from the multiplex perplexed.

The plot, such as it is, sees Michael Fassbender’s Counsellor (we never learn his name) involve himself in drug trafficking on the Tex-Mex border. Why we don’t know, though he’s about to marry a gorgeous senorita (Penélope Cruz).

The deal, inevitably, goes south. It’s not The Counsellor’s fault. It’s bad luck, coincidence. But certain parties don’t believe in coincidences, and in this world you make your own luck. The repercussions are terrible, vicious and unthinkable.

This was everything I was expecting it to be, stylish, well acted, original, violent - very much akin to No Country. Okay I don't have all the plot twists sorted but for escapism this is a great film.

Not worth it

I wouldn't waste your time. Awful film, predictable outcome, nonsensical scenes pieced together badly

Save your money!

Absolutely awful from the opening scene onwards! What a waste of money. The whole film was a series of disjointed nonsensical scenes. The plot was feeble and it was obvious who was going to come out on top right from the start.

Thoughtful

Reviewer: SandydanDate: 2013-11-21

The atmosphere of this film very akin to No Country For Old Men. Scene setting at the beginning takes time and yes, the audience has to join-up the dots; that's what makes a good movie. Scott = excellent
