Add this to the calendar folks, because 2018 is the ‘Year Of The Hero’, with everyone from Ant-Man to Aquaman getting their own movie (or, in some cases, a second movie).

Below, we introduce all the world's defenders coming soon to ODEON. Check our ultimate guide regulary for all the latest updates!

Black Panther - In cinemas now!

Hero credentials

  • T’Challa is the ruler of the isolated African country of Wakanda, the most advanced civilisation on Earth. He is also the Black Panther, a feline-like superhero empowered by the Heart-Shaped Herb, a special plant that gives him incredible strength, speed and stamina.

Movie blurb

  • Following his father’s death, T’Challa returns home from America to take up his rightful position as king. But the reappearance of an old enemy threatens the stability of Wakanda and the world…

Why it’s unmissable

  • With an incredible 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, Black Panther is the best-rated Marvel movie yet (and there have been 18 of them so far). Also, the film goes beyond the classic superheroes genre, bringing to life what is unanimously considered  a milestone in black culture's impact on Hollywood.

Avengers: Infinity War Part I - In cinemas 27th April

Hero credentials

  • Between the Avengers and their mighty Marvel pals, every superhero power you can possibly think of is ticked. Which is just as well because Mad Titan Thanos is no easy pickings…

Movie blurb

  • In this culmination of the entire MCU saga to date, alien overlord Thanos has finally arrived on Earth. What does he want? The six Infinity Stones, which will give him the power to bend the universe to his evil will. The Avengers reassemble to stop him, but they’re going to need a little help...

Why it’s unmissable

  • After 10 years of Marvel magic and mayhem, it’s all come down to this. Who will survive and what will be left of them? Is Infinity War going to be the end or the beginning of new Avengers?  Whatever happens, it's going to be epic and change the Marve universe forever...

Deadpool 2 - In Cinemas 16th May

Hero credentials

  • Pros – accelerated healing, skilled marksman, handy with a sword. Cons – never shuts up. Ever!

Movie blurb

With the teaser trailers exactly that – teasers! – and the official synopsis even less helpful (something about coffee mugs and sexually aggressive dogs), very little is known about Deadpool 2 – other than the fact that its makers have a heck of a sense of humour. We can tell you that the brilliant Josh Brolin is playing Cable, a teddy bear-carrying baddie who really does look the business. And that the ‘Merc with a Mouth’ is as annoyingly opinionated as ever.

Why it’s unmissable

  • The first movie was a riot of uber-violence, f-bombs and fourth-wall breaking. With a ’15’ rating once again guaranteed, we can expect another potty-mouthed action classic that refuses to play by the rules.

See this if you loved

  • The ground-breakingly anarchic original, but also those type of films which mix together superheroes,  violence and making fun of the genre itself such as Kick-Ass, Hellboy or Logan.

Ant-Man and the Wasp - In Cinemas 3rd August

Hero credentials

  • Thanks to a pioneering suit, former petty criminal Scott Lang is able to grow really, really big or really, really small - in both ways, he stays pretty strong!

Movie blurb

  • Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, fugitive Scott Lang – aka Ant-Man – is even more at large than he was before. But suit creator Dr. Hank Pym has a new mission for him, one that involves Ant-Man getting a partner to “watch his back” – and it’s Hope van Dyne aka the Wasp!

Why it’s unmissable

  • There’s been buzz (geddit?) around this sequel since it was announced, and no wonder – the first Ant-Man movie was an utter delight. With star Paul Rudd also helping the script this time, this sequel’s heroes may be small, but the box office is likely to be colossal.

See this if you loved

  • 2015’s wonderful Ant-Man and if you're fan of a cheecky actors such as Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas!

Venom - In Cinemas 5th October

Hero credentials

  • Venom started out in the comics as Spider-Man’s most nefarious foe, but has morphed into a tortured-but-likeable antihero in recent years. He’s an alien symbiote, so needs a human host to survive on Earth and, in this movie, he chooses the ever-impressive Tom Hardy (well, wouldn’t you?).

Movie blurb

  • With Venom’s release still more than half a year away, we don’t have too many details just yet. But we do have an awesome trailer (see below), while director Ruben Fleischer had this to say recently: “I can promise you badass action, Venom’s dark humour and an absolutely stunning performance by Tom Hardy!” There’s also a rumour that Tom Holland’s Spidey will be making an appearance...

Why it’s unmissable

  • Tom Hardy as Venom? Michelle Williams as Anne Weying? A 15 certificate? It all points to a Deadpool-style mass hit!

See this if you loved

  • A mix between the humor of Deadpool and the atmospheres from The Dark Knight trilogy (we’ve getting that same kind of brooding vibe).

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Release date pushed to February 2019)

Hero credentials

  • The telekinetic Jean Grey can usually be relied upon to best the baddies – but in this movie she is the developing dangerous skills that can turn her in the ultimate baddie....

Movie blurb

  • Based on The Dark Phoenix Saga (which ran in Uncanny X-Men – #101-108 and #129-138), this hugely anticipated X-Men outing sees Jean Grey (as played by Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner) gaining incredible new powers. Powers that make her do terrible, awful, world-ending things…How the X-Men will deal with it?

Why it’s unmissable

  • If you’re a comic-book movie fan, there are few things more dangerously delicious than watching a beloved character descend into darkness.  And the Dark Phoenix  is rated n.9 on the Top 100 Movie Villains of All the Time by IGN.

See this if you loved

  • Sophie Turner as Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse and blockbuster that reunites together an all-stars cast, in this case: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrance, Nicholas Hoult and new entry Jessica Chanstain!

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - In Cinemas 14th December

Hero credentials

  • The word is that our hero in this one isn’t Peter Parker, but rather a Brooklyn teen named Miles Morales, who’s been a big player in the Marvel comics since 2011. He’s got the same incredible powers as Peter, though, namely wall-crawling, web-spinning and skyscraper swinging. Cool!

Movie blurb

  • In this animated epic (and my goodness is the animation beautiful), a young Afro-Latino teenager names Miles takes on the mantle of Spider-Man. But in this universe, more than one hero wears the mask…

Why it’s unmissable

  • It’s produced by the guys behind The LEGO movie and the animation – as mentioned above – is just phenomenal. Also, where is Peter Parker? The trailer seems to suggest he’s – omg – dead. Say it ain’t so!

See this if you loved

  • Superheroes and animation together most of time have more freedom and imagination than actual live action films, like Batman: The Animated Series.

Aquaman - In Cinemas 21st December

Hero credentials

  • Aquaman is a half-man, half-Atlantean hybrid. He’s able to breathe underwater, communicate with sea-life and is also incredibly strong. But he’s troubled too, coming from two different worlds, neither of which he really fits in to.

Movie blurb

  • When the people of Atlantis threaten to revolt against those on the surface above them (who they feel are destroying the oceans), it’s up to reluctant Atlantean ruler Arthur Curry (aka Aquaman) to calm the troubled waters.

Why it’s unmissable

  • Pre-Justice League, it was The Flash who was getting all the attention. Then the film opened and Aquaman stole the show. Now the Dweller-in-the-Depths is getting his own solo feature and we absolutely cannot wait to dive in.

See this if you loved

  • Aquaman as your favorite one in Justice League (catch a glimpse below).
