JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL – CHOOSE YOUR AVATAR!
As Jumanji: The Next Level roars into ODEON cinemas, here’s our handy guide to the game’s fearless but very different avatars. With hungry hippos, giant anacondas, rampaging ostriches and an army of angry baboons threatening your three lives, which character would you choose to get you back to the real world in one piece?
Played by: Dwayne Johnson
Avatar of: Spencer Gilpin in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle; Eddie Gilpin in Jumanji: The Next Level
Strengths: Fearless; Climbing; Speed; Boomerang; Smouldering Intensity
Character Description: One of five selectable players in the Jumanji video game, Dr. Smolder Bravestone is a cross between Indiana Jones and John McClane with pecs to rival Arnie. He’s lethal with a boomerang and his smouldering intensity will stop you dead in its tracks.
The twist this time is that instead of being inhabited by Alex Wolff’s geeky Spencer, it’s Spencer’s hard of hearing grandfather Eddie (Danny DeVito) who’s enjoying the good doctor’s fully functioning knees.
Roarsome Fact: Hard as it is to believe now, Johnson says that he was more like Spencer than Smolder when he was in high school.
Played by: Karen Gillan
Avatar of: Martha Kaply in both Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The
Strengths: Karate; Tai Chi; Aikido; Dance Fighting; Nunchucks
Character Description: The only female avatar, Ruby Roundhouse is quite simply a force of nature. An expert in several forms of martial arts, she also has a deadly – and hilarious – dance fighting ability, which is activated every time the song ‘Oh Baby, I Love Your Way’ is played, and in this new film has added ‘Nunchucks’ to her list of talents. On the down side, Venom kills her in under 10 seconds. Still, deadly dance fighting – that’s hard to pass up!
Roarsome Fact: The original Jumanji, which was released in 1995 and starred the
late, great Robin Williams, is one of Gillan’s favourite films.
Played by: Kevin Hart
Avatar of: Anthony ‘Fridge’ Johnson in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle; Milo Walker
in Jumanji: The Next Level
Strengths: Zoology; Weapons Valet; Linguistics
Weaknesses: Cake; Speed; Strength
Character Description: When hulking high school football star Fridge misreads ‘Mouse’ as ‘Moose’ in the 2017 movie, he decides Franklin Finbar is definitely the character for him; only to be dismayed when he discovers that his avatar is actually a backpack-wearing weapons valet who is missing “the top two feet of my body”.
Roarsome Fact: Good friends in real life, this is the third time Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson has shared the screen together. In addition to the Jumanji movies, the pair also starred in the 2016 action comedy Central Intelligence.
Played by: Jack Black
Avatar of: Bethany Walker in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle; Fridge in Jumanji: The Next Level, then Bethany again
Strengths: Cartography; Archaeology; Paleontology; Geometry
Weaknesses: Endurance; Heat; Sun; Sand
Character Description: Another character who is somewhat mis-sold on the Jumanji ’Choose Your Character’ screen, what Professor Sheldon ‘Shelly’ Oberon lacks in stamina he makes up for in brainpower. As a renowned cartographer, he is the only one of the five avatars who can read or even see the Jumanji map.
Roarsome Fact: Channelling his inner teenage girl posed an interesting challenge for Black comedically. When he got the part his immediate thought was: “Damn, I’ve got to pump my game up!” We can’t wait to see what he does now that Ser’Darius Blain’s ‘Fridge’ is in control.
Played by: Nick Jonas
Avatar of: Alex Vreeke in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle; Spencer Gilpin in Jumanji: The Next Level
Strengths: Making Margaritas; Flying
Weaknesses: Mosquito Bites
Character Description: Those of you with good memories will recall that Fridge and Spencer were unable to select ‘Seaplane’ when they first fired up the Jumanji game in Welcome to the Jungle; that’s because he’d already been chosen by missing kid Alex Vreeke (Colin Hanks), who the gang later helped save.
Roarsome Fact: Tom ‘Spider-Man’ Holland was initially cast as Seaplane, but MCU scheduling conflicts meant he was forced to pull out and singer-songwriter Jonas ‘landed’ the part instead. Geddit!?
ALSO LOOK OUT FOR...
We know from the final The Next Level trailer that Bethany leaps, at least for a little while, into the avatar of this beautiful black horse, and while no details have been released yet as to who Ocean’s 8 star Awkwafina is playing, she’s important enough to the story to have her own character poster.
Could she possibly be taking over from Russell Van Pelt as
Jumanji’s new baddie?
Player ready? We certainly are. In fact, we can’t wait for this new game to begin!
Jumanji: The Next Level – in ODEON cinemas from 11 December.
