The Black Widow release date is almost upon us!
If the anticipation is getting too much, though, we’ve got your back.
We’ve assembled a bulging goody-bag of exclusive interviews, behind the scenes featurettes plus details of some very special Black Widow preview screenings and ODEON-exclusive giveaways to ease you through the final countdown.
Okay, let’s do this…
Black Widow release date: 7 July 2021
It’s been a few years since Avengers: Endgame and Natasha Romanoff’s last appearance on the big screen.
So, let’s get ourselves up to speed with Black Widow, where it sits in the MCU and what it means for Phase Four of Marvel Studios’ epic superhero franchise…

♦ Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow is an original member of the Avengers and has played a pivotal role in seven Marvel Cinematic Universe films to date (plus cameos in others), but Black Widow is the character’s first standalone adventure.
♦ For spoilerific reasons we don’t need to go into here, Black Widow (2021) is a prequel – its events taking place sometime between the end of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.
♦ This means Romanoff enters the Black Widow film isolated and on the run, having broken the Sokovia Accords as a member of Team Cap. The accords were designed to control the activities of superheroes and other enhanced individuals.
♦ Black Widow is not a classic origin story, but it does see Romanoff reuniting with key figures from her time in the Soviet-era Red Room assassin training programme. Through them (and other figures from her blood-stained ledger) we’ll learn a lot more of Natasha’s backstory.
♦ The film marks the final time Scarlett Johansson will play former Soviet assassin, S.H.I.E.L.D. operative and Avenger, Black Widow on the big screen.
♦ As Johansson steps back from the MCU, Black Widow will simultaneously cue up Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) to inherit the codename as the franchise timeline returns to the post-Endgame era. As Black Widow’s director Cate Shortland told Empire about the film, “It’s going to propel another female storyline.”
The Black Widow trailers are spectacular and, as the film’s release date draws near, Marvel Studios has been dropping some tantalising new featurettes that flesh out previously glimpsed set-pieces, delve behind the scenes, and reveal the stakes for major characters.
First up, we have Scarlett Johansson introducing a special ‘Playmaker’ trailer that highlights the role that Black Widow’s chequered past (and former Red Room ‘family’) will play in helping her defeat mysterious new MCU villain, Taskmaster.
Then, we get a pair of Budapest-based extended clips. They show Natasha and Yelena on foot and using their Red Room training to evade and outrun a small army of very intense new Black Widows.
Related question: how badly must you want to complete the mission that you’ll attack someone who’s trying to save your life?
The second Budapest featurette finds Natasha and Yelena still being pursued, only now our heroes are in an SUV and a solitary Black Widow recruit is giving chase on a motorbike.
We love Yelena and Natasha’s sisterly bickering as they try to take their pursuer out - here's hoping for more moments like this!
Last up, we have a behind-the-scenes featurette that underlines just how much of Black Widow’s exhilarating action is the result of practical effects and real stunts.
The hand-to-hand combat looks uncharacteristically punishing and authentic for the MCU, too.
No doubt about it, Black Widow may be a prequel, but it’s going to be unlike any Marvel movie we’ve seen so far.
We’ve been thinking… we don’t want you to have to wait for 9 July to experience Black Widow in all its glory (on the BIG screen).
That’s why we’re putting on special preview screenings of Black Widow in selected ODEON cinemas on 7 and 8 July.
