What’s the backstory to DC League Of Super-Pets?

Ever wondered how superheroes spend their downtime? According to the DC League Of Super-Pets trailer, they get home, kick off their combat boots, slip out of the spandex – and get a tongue bath from a furry friend.

The concept of super pets isn’t totally out of the blue. Back in the ’50s, DC Comics introduced a crime-fighting animal division that included such characters as Streaky the Supercat, Beppo the Super-Monkey and Comet the Super-Horse (no, us neither).

But while the so-called Legion Of Super Pets never quite caught fire, a lightbulb lit when the Lego Batman Movie co-writer Jared Stern and his wife recently volunteered at a pet rescue shelter.

"They seemed so powerless," the DC League Of Super-Pets writer/director told Entertainment Weekly. “I don't know why, but I thought, 'What if those pets had powers?’”

What’s the DC League Of Super-Pets plot?

Krypto the Superdog has his daily routine down. Bounce on Superman’s bed at daybreak. Assist his master in nine-to-five heroics. Try not to cock his leg while airborne. It’s a superdog’s life – and Krypto wouldn’t have it any other way.

But Krypto’s role as pampered pooch is shattered when supervillain Lex Luthor captures Superman and the rest of the Justice League, including Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, The Flash and Green Lantern. To save his master, the dog of steel must step up to the plate (and we don’t mean to eat a pile of sausages).

To pull off this perilous rescue mission, Krypto will need to assemble a crew of his own. Trouble is, most of the animals in Metropolis are mouth-breathing, stick-fetching, toilet-lapping norms. But when the residents of a pet rescue shelter are given superpowers by a mysterious orb, Krypto realises this makeshift team will need to settle their pet hates and work together.

Who stars in the DC League Of Super-Pets voice cast?

The moment Krypto the Superdog opens his muzzle, you’ll recognise the unmistakable bark of Dwayne Johnson. The Jumanji star has past form when it comes to voice work – from Moana to Area 51 – and for DC League Of Super-Pets, he plays Krypto as an aspiring leader who’s in over his head.

Challenging Krypto’s authority is Ace the Bat-Hound, voiced by comedian Kevin Hart, and resurrecting a character created in 1955 by DC’s Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff (and put to sleep a decade later). In those early comic books, Ace was Batman’s faithful hound, and while the character starts out as a rescue mutt in DC League Of Super-Pets, he’s later adopted by the Caped Crusader – and has strong opinions on who should be top dog.

Forget Batman V Superman – when these two warring canines go head-to-head, the fur will fly. “We have such an amazing cast of actors,” Seven Bucks Productions president Hiram Garcia told Collider, “and anytime you get Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart together doing what they do, you know it’s going to be a big, fun ride for audiences.”

Isn’t there history between Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart?

That’s right. If you watched the pair throw down in the Jumanji sequels, you’ll know that Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart enjoy a rare rapport, both onscreen and off. “I can honestly tell you that I’ve never had this type of brotherly chemistry with anyone I’ve worked with,Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter. “We give each other sh*t. We compete with each other, but we have fun.

That sibling banter is the secret ingredient in Krypto and Ace’s hilarious one-upmanship. "This is a buddy story about those two guys,Stern explained in an EW interview. “Krypto flies above the streets, Ace is from the streets. He's a shelter pet and so he knows a little bit more about being a regular dog. Their dynamic is figuring that out and butting heads in that way.

Who else is in the DC League Of Super-Pets cast?

Let’s meet the super pets. Saturday Night Live’s Vanessa Bayer is PB, a pot-bellied pig whose newly acquired power is the ability to balloon into a super-sized porker.

American Pie’s Natasha Lyonne plays Merton, a rescue turtle who develops super-speed. And don’t forget Rogue One’s Diego Luna as Chip, a nutty squirrel who can fire lightning bolts from his paws.

So who plays Batman in DC League Of Super-Pets?

The Dark Knight is voiced by screen legend Keanu Reeves – and it tells you everything about the anticipation surrounding DC League Of Super-Pets that even a mini-trailer of the John Wick star in character practically broke the internet.

Keanu Reeves is quite possibly the biggest star in Hollywood who has yet to find himself part of a major superhero franchise,” wrote Cinema Blend’s Dirk Libbey, “and while this doesn’t really count, that’s sort of the joke. Keanu’s appearance in the trailer gives us a ‘dark and brooding’ Batman, but one who is playing it so straight that it becomes comedy.

But then, what else would you expect from the razor-sharp comedy brain behind The Lego Batman and Ninjago movies?

I wanted it to be a real serious superhero threat – but also one that uniquely can only be solved by a group of pets," Stern told EW. "I really wanted people to come away from this movie feeling like animation is a technique and not a genre. I wanted them to feel like, 'That was a really great superhero movie and it had everything I love in a superhero movie. It had great action, was really fun…’
