Don’t be a muggle – meet the new Fantastic Beasts characters (and the old faces)

Bursting from the imagination of novelist J.K. Rowling, there’s nothing more weird, wild or wonderful than the Fantastic Beasts characters.

From noble Newt and hapless Jacob to Mads Mikkelsen’s sinister new Grindelwald, here are all the Fantastic Beasts characters to love, hate, cheer and hiss on April 8th.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore release date: April 8th

Eddie Redmayne
is Newt Scamander

Like a disaster-prone Doctor Dolittle, this magizoologist carries a case of enchanted critters and is Albus Dumbledore’s trusted confidant in the battle against dark wizard Grindelwald. The hero of the first Enchanted Beasts movies, Newt has proved himself tougher than he looks – but is he qualified to lead a ragtag squad into the Wizarding World’s biggest battle?

It might be a career-making role, but Fantastic Beasts 3 has been a tough gig for Redmayne at times, with the Britpacker telling Variety that one scene saw himself dropped into freezing water in the middle of the night. “We were meant to shoot in the summer,” he reflected. “But because of lockdown, suddenly you find yourself swimming outdoors in the British winter…!”

If Newt was the protagonist of the first two Enchanted Beasts movies, the title of this third instalment tells us the focus is about to shift to this iconic figure in the wizarding community. Dumbledore’s quiet life of academia, teaching Defence Against The Dark Arts at Hogwarts, is soon to be thrown into chaos by Grindelwald’s rise, as his old school friend “pulls the world apart with hate” and draws him ever-closer to a showdown.

Jude Law has done a fine job of de-aging the future Hogwarts headmaster from the Harry Potter films. But could this upstanding wizard be hiding something shameful up his sleeve? “The biggest secret of the Wizarding World – Dumbledore’s mystery – will be revealed,” says director David Yates. “And you’ll need to watch the movie to find out what it is.”

Mads Mikkelsen as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

Mads Mikkelsen
is Gellert Grindelwald

You thought Voldemort was creepy? Meet Gellert Grindelwald: a dead-eyed dark wizard who is probably whisping your thoughts out through your earhole as you read this. In Fantastic Beasts 3, Grindelwald’s vision of a new Wizarding World Order is terrifyingly close to fruition, with the film’s fictional events dovetailing with real-life disasters like the build-up to WWII.

Played by Johnny Depp in the first two Fantastic Beasts movies, Mads Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald has a marrow-chilling aura of his own. “To try to bring Johnny’s intensity and his way of doing it into my work is a no-go,” the actor told Total Film. “I have to find my own, because his is unique, and I just have to let that be, and find a different path.”

Ezra Miller as Aurelius Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

© 2021 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Ezra Miller
is Aurelius Dumbledore/Credence Barebone

You can’t choose your blood, and in the Fantastic Beasts saga, Albus Dumbledore’s brother has already darkened the family name by releasing the destructive Obscurus parasite in New York in revenge for his abusive childhood (when he was called Credence Barebone).

Expect even more of an identity crisis in Fantastic Beasts 3, as this emotionally broken sibling chooses between redemption and Grindelwald’s dark path. “He’s like this military recruit now,” Miller told the Thrillist website of Aurelius. “And what's been manipulated is his own trauma.”

Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

Dan Fogler
is Jacob Kowalski

Whenever the Fantastic Beasts saga threatens to get too downbeat, there’s always Jacob: the loveable muggle, war veteran and baker who was pulled into the Wizarding World in the first Fantastic Beasts movie after unwittingly swapping suitcases with Newt.

We’ll be watching closely to see how Jacob’s relationship with the wayward Queenie plays out, and whether he can pull his former lover back from the influence of Grindelwald. That is, if he doesn’t Avada Kedavra himself with the wand he’s been trusted with during the mission.

Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

Alison Sudol
is Queenie Goldstein

Queenie is a former employee of the Federal Wand Permit Bureau and a powerful Legilimens (the ability to embed oneself in another person’s mind and trawl their emotions). But at the end of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, Jacob’s one-time soulmate went rogue, joining the dark wizard’s army.

“She has a huge power and yet is made to feel like she’s nothing,” said Sudol when Entertainment Weekly asked her to rationalise her character’s actions. “That could make anyone feel crazy.”

Callum Turner as Theseus Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

© 2021 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Callum Turner
is Theseus Scamander

Anyone with a domineering older sibling will recognise the complex dynamic between Newt and his big brother. A war hero and power player at the Ministry Of Magic, Theseus despairs of Newt’s bumbling ways and predicts failure for the fightback about Grindelwald. “He's the opposite of Newt,” Turner told Collider. “He's gone through the same schooling obviously, but once he got out, he decided that the establishment was the way to fight the good fight.”

At first glance, he’s haughty and unlikeable – but don’t be too hard on Theseus. After all, long-standing Fantastic Beasts fans will remember his tragic backstory, with the character losing fianceé Leta Lestrange after she sacrificed herself during the showdown with Grindelwald at the Père Lachaise Cemetery.

Jessica Williams as Professor Eulalie ‘Lally’ Hicks in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

Jessica Williams
is Professor Eulalie ‘Lally’ Hicks

We know she’s a teacher at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but blink and you missed Lally in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald. This time around, it seems J.K. Rowling wants to give The Daily Show’s Jessica Williams a meatier role – according to an interview with The Cut, the author sent the actress a nine-page document on the character’s arc.

“She gave me all this cool information and did it just because she wanted to,” said Williams. “It was this very thorough background on my character. A lot of the lore of my character ties to my personal history.”

William Nadylam as Yusuf Kama in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

William Nadylam
is Yusuf Kama

This French-Sengalese pureblood wizard has watched Newt’s back in the past – but expect sparks to fly with Aurelius, whom Yusuf once tried to assassinate.

Victoria Yeates as Bunty Broadacre in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

Victoria Yeates
is Bunty Broadacre

Newt’s assistant is described by Call The Midwife actress Victoria Yeates as a Hogwarts alumnus who is “lovely” and “sweet”. We’ve seen in past instalments that she’s no slouch at trapping runaway Nifflers – but can she step up to the showdown with Grindelwald?

Poppy Corby-Tuech as Vinda Rosier in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

© 2021 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Poppy Corby-Tuech
is Vinda Rosier

Grindelwald's most loyal follower has powers of Occlumency that make her mind impervious to Legilimency and her increasingly dangerous actions impossible to predict. Fear her.

Aleksandr Kuznetsov as Helmut in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

© 2021 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Aleksandr Kuznetsov
is Helmut Weiss

Short of doorstepping Rowling, you’ll have to make do with Helmut’s bare bones backstory. We know he’s an American wizard and one of the founding Aurors in the Magical Congress of the USA – while the early signs suggest he’ll line up with Grindelwald. He’s played by Russian arthouse hot-tip Aleksandr Kuznetsov, who describes himself as a “thinking rebel”.

Richard Coyle as Aberforth Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

© 2021 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Richard Coyle
is Aberforth Dumbledore

The younger brother of Albus and landlord of the Hog’s Head Inn, Aberforth is a gruff presence in the Fantastic Beasts trailer, giving a visiting Newt the evil eye. Given that British actor Richard Coyle was previously best-known for his role in The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina as Father Blackwood – a devil-worshipping, voodoo-practising warlock – don’t rule out a leap to the dark side in Fantastic Beasts 3.

Maria Fernanda Cândido as Vicência Santos in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

Maria Fernanda Cândido
is Vicência Santos

We know Fantastic Beasts 3 will have a globe-trotting flavour – the official synopsis says it “explores the magical communities in Bhutan, Germany, and China” – and that’s underlined by the presence of this Minister of Magic for Brazil. “Vicencia is very powerful,” Cândido told 29 Hours. “She represents witches from the Latin world [and] speaks a little to all of us.”

Dave Wong as Liu Tao in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

© 2021 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Dave Wong
is Liu Tao

We know Liu Tao holds considerable influence: he’s the candidate for the post of Supreme Head of the International Confederation of Wizards, as well as Minister of Magic for China. And given that British actor Dave Wong is also a seasoned martial artist, don’t expect this character to just be a pencil-pusher.

Oliver Masucci as Anton Vogel in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

Oliver Masucci
is Anton Vogel

Sharp-suited and austere, Anton Vogel oozes power. In Fantastic Beasts 3, he’s not only the current Supreme Head of the International Confederation of Wizards, but also Minister of Magic for Germany. As the Stuttgart-born actor pointed out in an interview with Stern magazine, that makes him “the leader of the entire wizarding world”.

The Niffler from Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

© 2021 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

And don’t forget...
the Niffler!

Hands-down the fan favourite from the Fantastic Beasts saga so far, this adorable critter looks like a velveteen mole crossed with a duck-billed platypus. It’s just a shame that Niffler is also a chronic kleptomaniac who’ll steal anything shiny that isn’t nailed down. You have been warned…
