Free Guy is a perfect big-screen barnstormer for welcoming film-lovers back to ODEON. Set in an online open-world videogame and starring Ryan Reynolds and Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, it’s a spectacular and uplifting action-comedy.
Here’s all you need to know about Free Guy – release date, trailers, plot, cast and surprising cameos from some of the biggest gaming YouTubers in the world.
Guy (Ryan Reynolds) believes he’s just a bank teller – a bit of a nobody in a strangely violent and chaotic city who wakes up day after day with a clean slate despite all the bank robberies and vehicle smashes of the day before.
The thing is, he’s actually a non-playable character (NPC) in a wildly popular open-world videogame called Free City (think GTA meets Fortnite). However, when videogame programmers Milly (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Stranger Things’ Joe Keery) tinker with Free City’s code they give Guy the ability to see the videogame world hidden just below the surface of his reality.
Initially stunned to learn he’s not only a videogame character but a background character at that, Guy, with the help of Milly’s kickass in-game avatar Molotov Girl, decides to shake things up and become not just a good Guy, but a great Guy.
Meanwhile, in the real world, Free City’s obnoxious publisher Antoine (Taika Waititi) is dead set against Blue Shirt Guy’s growing popularity and will do anything to stop this amiable NPC from becoming the hero of his game.
Free Guy had us at ‘Ryan Reynolds’ but he’s just one of the film’s fabulous cast.
Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Green Lantern) is Guy
Guy is just an anonymous (and oblivious) non-playable character in Free City. That is until he gets the opportunity to become the hero of his own (and Free City’s) story.
Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) is Milly
In the real world, Milly is a talented game programmer. In Free City, meanwhile, she’s the wall-to-wall awesome Molotov Girl.
Joe Keery (Stranger Things, Molly’s Game) is Keys
Keys is Milly’s good friend and a programmer at the company that develops and publishes Free City.
Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, What We Do in the Shadows) is Antoine
Antoine is Free City’s laughably arrogant publisher. He’s not going to see his baby taken out of his hands by the actions of a rogue NPC.
Lil Rel Howery (Get Out, Bird Box) is Buddy
Bank security guard and Guy’s best friend, Buddy doesn’t have his pal’s existential angst, but he’ll back him up 100%.
Utkarsh Ambudkar (The Mindy Project, Blindspotting) is Mouser
Self-confessed gamer Ambudkar plays Mouser, a programmer who, along with Keys, is tasked with manipulating the game world from within to take Guy down.
Phenomenal. Exhilarating. Very, very, funny. Look out for a ton of nods to beloved online videogame franchises in the mix. You’ll never look at the hapless NPCs in GTA V, Saints Row or any open-world sandbox game in quite the same way ever again.

If you’re in any doubt about Free Guy’s videogame credentials, look no further than the slew of beloved gaming YouTubers set to cameo in the movie.
First of all, there’s the fantastic Jacksepticeye (26.6million subscribers and counting) aka Seán William McLoughlin, who’s going to be lending his voice to a Free City incarnation of the classic, old-school videogame icon, Qbert. Then we have YouTube phenomenon and videogame streamer, Ninja (24.2million subscribers and counting) aka Richard Tyler Blevins, Aussie legend and pro-gamer, Lazarbeam (18.4million subscribers and counting) aka Lannan Eacott, and massively popular Twitch streamer and YouTube personality, Pokimane (6.5million subscribers and counting) aka Imane Anys.
From upcoming films to promos for his own businesses, Ryan Reynolds has become famous for his inspired and off-the-wall YouTube videos that simultaneously poke fun at his own celebrity while giving the world even more reasons to love him.
He’s done it again with Free Guy, filming a slew of promos with fellow cast members that rapidly take a sharp turn as Reynolds’ movie-star ego takes a knock and he acts out (tongue in cheek, of course).
Our favourite finds Reynolds and Comer talking earnestly about the craft of characterisation in Free Guy. That is until Reynolds notices that the promo’s caption writer is listing Jodie’s prestigious acting awards on-screen while his side remains conspicuously empty.
All these promos bode so well for Free Guy, and you can watch the best of them here…
