Free Guy Trailer 2 Breakdown - Everything You Want To Know

The new Free Guy trailer has just dropped and it’s given Ryan Reynolds fans – i.e. everyone – a ton more info about the actor’s latest action blockbuster.

Free Guy’s first trailer, which dropped in December last year, introduced us to Guy – an NPC (Non-Playable-Character) in an open-world videogame called Free City. However, Guy feels like there should be more to his life than constantly having the bank he works at held up by a parade of weird and wonderful characters.

So, when an accident gives him the ability to see his world as the videogame it really is, he decides – with the help of player/programmer called Milly/Molotov Girl – that he’s not going to remain the background character he was programmed to be.

“Good morning, Goldie!”

With these sunny words Guy (Ryan Reynolds), greets his pet goldfish and another normal day in Free City. Only Guy’s normal isn’t as normal as it might seem: he’s actually a non-playable character (NPC) in a massively multiplayer open-world videogame in which players from around the planet control their customised avatars to undertake missions and just, well, cause havoc.

Perhaps that explains why a.) Guy sees a heavily armed someone firing an RPG from a zipline on his morning walk to work, and b.) doesn’t find this in any way… unusual.

“I have everything I need, except one thing”

By accident or design, Guy isn’t completely satisfied with his repetitive lot in life. And, as he says these words in voiceover we get our first trailer-two glimpse of the person who’s going to be instrumental in helping him become the hero, not only of his own life but of Free City itself.

Her gamer tag is Molotov Girl, but in the real world, she’s called Milly, and is played by the awesome Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), clearly relishing the opportunity to channel Villanelle’s in-charge, on-point, deadpan humour in a new direction.

“There’s no easy way to say this: this world – it’s a videogame.”

Guy’s unprogrammed interest in Molotov Girl starts a chain of events that’ll change everything. First up is a pair of augmented reality glasses that enable Guy to see Free City as gamers see it – and in a way he hasn't questioned before.

It’s an awesome visual device executed flawlessly by Free Guy’s director, Shawn Levy. Levy will be familiar to fans of Stranger Things, as will Joe Keery as Milly/Molotov Girl’s friend and fellow programmer, Keys.

“Who is this guy?”

This ‘Guy’, it seems, is the NPC who’s going to shake things up in Free City.

In fact, without a player controlling him, he’s going to become a hero for the fictional city he calls home.

Cue a heartwarming fist pump of a sequence showing Guy thwarting robberies and protecting NPCs in the game world, while his previously anonymous character – now called Blue Shirt Guy – becomes headline news around the real world. Much to the ire of the game's creator, Antoine, played by the ever-brilliant Taika Waititi.

“We can change our world, but we have to fight together.”

What’s adorable is that, throughout all of this newfound badassery, Guy appears, at heart, to remain the sunny, sweet NPC he started out as. And so, by the time he and Molotov Girl roar towards the title card in what looks like a flame-orange Chevrolet Camaro – “It’s the first time I’ve ever driven a car!” – we guarantee you’ll be grinning from ear to ear.
