Dragonpedia & Viking Guide

As How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World swoops into ODEON cinemas, let’s meet all the characters in this final installment and watch Game of Thrones' star Kit Harington auditioning with Toothless...

Voiced by: Jay Baruchel

When we first encountered Hiccup he was a shy 15-year-old Viking struggling to find his place in the world. No more.

Determined to honour his late father, Jay Baruchel’s immensely likeable hero is now chief of Berk, leading wisely and courageously alongside his dragon Toothless, a Night Fury. But trouble, quite literally, waits in the wings.

Hiccup’s adorable dragon (so named because of his retractable teeth) gets a girlfriend in this third chapter: an untamed female Light Fury.

He’s instantly smitten – in fact, you could say sparks fly – which causes a few headaches for best buddy Hiccup as his usually reliable scaly friend starts acting like a loved-up teenager.

Astrid Hofferson

Voiced by: America Ferrera

Strong, self-assured and extremely smart, Viking warrior Astrid (played by Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera) takes no nonsense from anyone – an invaluable trait in the village of Berk, which is full of larger-than-life characters.

Now engaged to Hiccup, Astrid acts as his counsel throughout this third movie, while also kicking baddie butt when required.

Light Fury

The Light Fury moves as fast as Toothless and shares his ability to blend into the sky - even during daylight hours.

With her white coloration, the Light Fury hides seamlessly in clouds, sea fog and distant horizons. Although skittish and skeptical, she shares Toothless' deep sense of empathy and will wield her plasma blast to defend any in need.

Eret, Son Of Eret

Voiced by: Kit Harington

Introduced in How To Train Your Dragon 2, former dragon trapper Eret (played by Game Of Thrones’ Kit Harington) is now a proud Rider of Berk, ready to defend the village alongside his dragon Skullcrusher from any threats.

Which is just as well because there’s a whopping one on the horizon…

Voiced by: Cate Blanchett

After 20 years of self-imposed isolation, Hiccup’s long-lost mother – with whom he was reunited in the second movie – is now living in Berk with her Stormcutter dragon, Cloudjumper.

Voiced by two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, Valka is as fearless and uncompromising as ever, although still a little odd. (Two decades of hanging out with only dragons will do that to you!)

Gobber the Belch

Voiced by: Craig Ferguson

Berk’s blacksmith might look fearsome, but he has a heart the size of a Bewilderbeast.

A mentor to Hiccup since he was a boy, Gobber’s wisdom is needed now more than ever in this latest chapter, as his one-time trainee sets out to fulfil his destiny and find the hidden dragon world.

Grimmel the Grisley

Voiced by: F. Murray Abraham

Get ready to boo hiss, as Grimmel the Grisley really is the ultimate movie villain, a lean, mean, leather-clad human (voiced in dastardly fashion by Homeland’s F. Murray Abraham) who’s hell-bent on either enslaving or destroying all dragons.

Make no mistake, he is the darkest threat Hiccup, Toothless and their Dragon Rider friends have ever faced.

Voiced by: Jonah Hill

Cocky and smug, Snotlout is a hero in his own mind, despite having emerged from puberty as the shortest, squattest Viking of the gang.

Voiced by: Christopher Mintz-Plasse

Resident dragon nerd and statistic guru, Fishleg is a skittish and lovable oaf who seems to only get bigger with age.

Voiced by: Kristen Wiig

Ruffnut is the conniving sister half of the notorious twin duo. Much like her brother Tuffnut, she delights in all dangerous things.

She is still the last single lady on Berk, making her the unwiilling recipient of Snotlout's and Fishlegs' competitive wooing.

Voiced by: Justin Rupple

Though slow on the uptake, Tuffnut is brazen and fearless. He is always up for defying orders and taking on deadly odds - the crazier, the better.

Stormfly is Astrid Hofferson's Deadly Nadder.

Although she preens and grooms herself like the most fastidious of birds, Stormfly actually possesses a playful spirit.

After Stoick's death (Hiccup's father), Skullcrusher became Eret's dragon.

He's stern and serious looking, and sometimes a little stubborn - like his previous owner.

Cloudjumper is Valka's Stormcutter.

He is proud and dignified and as a result is not as playful as Toothless, but kind enough to scatter baby dragons away who trifle with Toothless.

Barf and Belch

Barf and Belch are Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston's Hideous Zippleback.

They have a laughable sense of humor and they enjoy doing the tasks Ruffnut and Tuffnut tell them to do.

Grimmel the Grisly has trained six Deathgrippers to be his vicious killers. In place of front legs, Deathgrippers possess jagged, razor-sharp pincers similar that of a mantis and  are capable of launching acid at their intended targets
