M. Night Shyamalan’s Old – release date and origins. What is Old (2021)?

Ever since he burst onto the scene with the twisterific The Sixth Sense (1999) writer-director M Night Shyamalan has become synonymous with a particular type of horror-tinged thriller – wildly inventive and frequently balanced on a surprising revelation that flips the audience’s understanding of all that’s come before on its head.

From that memorable debut through the stubbornly unflashy superhero/supervillain Unbreakable trilogy (2000-2019) and everyday alien invasion film Signs (2002) to the thoroughly creepy horror of The Visit (2015), Shyamalan’s finest films frequently find themselves in best-ever lists for good reason.

But more than that, throughout his career Shyamalan’s ambition to give viewers something they’ve never seen before is undeniable, and the results are always worth watching and debating with mates afterwards.

Location-wise, Old is a departure for M Night Shyamalan. With its gorgeous tropical beach setting, it’s the first of his films to have been shot entirely outside of his beloved Greater Philadelphia.

But when it comes to its sky-high concept, Old could scarcely be more Shyamalan-y if it tried. Inspired by Sandcastle, a graphic novel by Swiss artist Frederik Peeters and French author Pierre Oscar Levy, Old creates inexplicable horror for a family of holidaymakers as they find themselves ageing a lifetime within a day on a secluded – and seemingly inescapable – sandy beach.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Old – trailer and plot. What is Old (2021) about?

While on a tropical holiday, a young family’s joy at discovering a secluded sandy cove kissed by aquamarine waves quickly evaporates when they – and a handful of other sun worshippers – begin to age at an alarming rate.

With pre-teens growing into bewildered young adults, and parents visibly wrinkling into old age in a matter of hours, the race is on to try and escape an isolated cove that seems very reluctant indeed to let its visitors leave.

But with the natural span of life seemingly compressed into a single day, what are the chances any of them will survive long enough to unravel the mystery and make it back to the world they understand?

M. Night Shyamalan’s Old – cast and characters. Who’s who in Old (2021) – and for how long?

Okay, hold onto your two-piece because, thanks to its rapid-ageing premise, Old’s cast of characters is a little more complex than your average beach movie’s. Allow us to explain.

Take the family at the heart of the film: there’s dad Guy (Gael García Bernal – Mozart in the Jungle, Y Tu Mamá También), mum Prisca (Vicky Krieps – Phantom Thread, Hanna), plus their two adorable young kids, Maddox (Alexa Swinton) and Trent (Nolan River).

Only, thanks to the inexplicably rapid ageing, Maddox is also played as a teenager by Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit, Last Night in Soho), and as a grown adult by Embeth Davidtz (Matilda, Army of Darkness)!

Trent meanwhile is played by an additional three actors, Luca Faustino Rodriguez (as a slightly older Trent), Alex Wolff (Hereditary, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) as Teenage Trent, and Emun Elliott (Prometheus, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens) as Adult Trent.

As for the rest of the beach’s unfortunate visitors, it’s generally more straightforward. We have Jarin and Patricia (Ken Leung – Lost, Industry) and (Nikki Amuka-Bird – Jupiter Ascending, The Children Act), and a character called Mid-Sized Sedan (Aaron Pierre – The Underground Railroad, Britannia).

Then there’s middle-aged Charles (Rufus Sewell – Judy, The Man in the High Castle) and his young partner Chrystal (Abbey Lee – Mad Max: Fury Road, Neon Demon).

And, finally, their young daughter Kara who’s played by Kylie Bailey (young Kara), Mikaya Fisher (slightly older Kara), and Eliza Scanlen (Teenage Kara).

Watch the trailer and you’ll see rapid ageing isn’t the only unexpected and scary event Scanlen (Little Women, Sharp Objects) endures before the credits roll.
