The Boss Baby: Family Business – the ultimate crib sheet

The Boss Baby: Family Business is an inspired sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s very funny The Boss Baby. The Templeton brothers are all grown up and have drifted apart. Thankfully, BabyCorp has a fresh-faced new agent on the case and she’s closer to Tim and Ted Jr. than either of them realise.

The Boss Baby: Family Business release date: 22 October 2021

The Boss Baby: Family Business backstory.

How did we get here?

As any parent will tell you, babies may be tiny but they instinctively know how to rule their new household with the unreasonable energy of a particularly demanding CEO. That was the very relatable vibe of author Marla Frazee’s 2007 children’s book, Boss Baby. A vibe that, in turn, became the inspiration for DreamWorks Animations’ very funny film.

Starring Alec Baldwin as the voice of Baby/Ted Templeton Jr., Boss Baby revealed a world in which a team of suited and booted, super-intelligent infants run BabyCorp. Its mission? To distribute babies to loving families around the world and to troubleshoot whenever threats to babies’ dominance as the cutest darn things on Earth arose.

The first Boss Baby movie saw Ted and his older brother Tim – initially not at all happy about having a sibling – reluctantly join forces to thwart a plan by the seemingly innocent-looking Puppy Co. to genetically create a mercilessly adorbs ‘Forever Puppy’ that never aged. Naturally, the Templeton brothers succeeded and – awww – grew closer to one another in the process, too.

Brilliantly, The Boss Baby’s final scene – set decades later – not only showed the now-adult brothers still getting on despite their very different characters but also revealed that Tim Templeton’s newly born second daughter was a Boss Baby, too. Sequel, anyone?

What’s The Boss Baby 2 story?

Oh no! The adult Templeton brothers have drifted apart and, honestly, it’s not hard to see why. Corporate-minded Ted has traded being a Boss Baby for being a high-powered but distracted CEO. Meanwhile, his older brother Tim is a much more laid-back family man, with a whip-smart seven-year-old daughter Tabitha, and a toddler called Tina.

Tim remembers their childhood experiences with BabyCorp, but Ted does not. So when baby Tina reveals to her dad that she’s in the ‘family business’ too and on a mission, the first challenge is to convince a very sceptical Ted that a.) Boss Babies exist and, b.) that his older brother hasn’t lost his marbles.

The second challenge? To persuade the brothers to drink an experimental BabyCorp formula that’ll revert the pair to their younger selves for 48 hours. Just long enough to help Tina infiltrate Tabitha’s school and investigate its principal Dr Erwin Armstrong and a plot to – gasp! – get rid of parents once and for all.

Who’s who in The Boss Baby 2?

Mix up a fresh batch of formula, we’re meeting The Boss Baby 2’s main players.

  • Alec Baldwin (Mission Impossible: Fallout) is Ted Templeton Jr./Boss Baby

As a BabyCorp executive, Ted Templeton was a legend with an ego to match. As an adult, he’s no less full of himself, much to the irritation of his older brother, Tim.

  • James Marsden (Sonic the Hedgehog) is Tim Templeton

Family man Tim is everything his younger brother Ted is not: instinctively kind and thoughtful, creative and… woefully uncoordinated.

  • Amy Sedaris (BoJack Horseman) is Tina Templeton

Tina is Tim’s youngest daughter and an opinionated executive at BabyCorp just like her uncle Ted used to be. She’s on a mission and needs the help of the bickering ‘boomers’ Tim and Ted.

  • Ariana Greenblatt (Love and Monsters) is Tabitha Templeton

Seven-year-old Tabitha is Tim’s elder daughter. She’s super smart and attends Dr Erwin Armstrong’s school, but her dad worries she’s growing up too quickly.

Jeff Goldblum (Thor: Ragnorok) is Dr Erwin Armstrong
There’s definitely more to Dr Erwin Armstrong’s school than meets the eye. For example, why is he teaching babies to misbehave?

  • Eva Longoria (The Sentinel) is Carol Templeton

Carol is Tabitha and Tina’s mum. She hates to see that her husband Tim has grown apart from his younger brother. Unbeknownst to Carol, though, her precocious youngest has a plan that may just bring them together again.

  • James McGrath (The Boss Baby) is Wizzie

Wizzie Tim Templeton’s Gandalf-like talking alarm clock. In The Boss Baby, he helped young Tim absorb the arrival of his new young brother. Decades later, he’s a little the worse for wear, but he’s still around and full of (sometimes useful) advice.

Why is The Boss Baby: Family Business a big-screen must-see?

Super funny for adults and children alike, we loved The Boss Baby, but we think The Boss Baby 2 is better still. It’s even more fast-paced than its predecessor, with spectacular action sequences and a hilarious script that’s sharper than a ninja baby’s katana.

Add to this a heartwarming story about the importance of childhood that’ll appeal to current and former Boss Babies of all ages, and The Boss Baby: Family Business has ‘hall-of-fame family cinema visit’ written all over it.
