Top Gun 2 at IMAX is the closest thing to being in Tom Cruise’s cockpit.

As the ultimate cinema format for director Joseph Kosinski’s revolutionary cinematography, here’s why seeing Top Gun: Maverick at IMAX will put you right up there with the best of the best.

Top Gun: Maverick release date: May 27th

Is Top Gun: Maverick in IMAX?

Affirmative – and we’re cleared for takeoff. The Top Gun: Maverick release date is May 27th, and when you take your seats at ODEON IMAX, you’ll swear you’re strapped into an F-14 cockpit.

Between the enormous IMAX cinema screens and head-spinning IMAX audio, the aerial skirmishes in this long-awaited Top Gun sequel feel so real, you might just reach for the ejector seat. If you’re a regular to ODEON Scene, you’ll already know the Top Gun 2 plot (if not, get flight-ready with our preview and trailer breakdown).

Thirty-six years after the original film, this sequel is a tale of regret and redemption, as Tom Cruise’s older/wiser fighter ace returns from the wilderness to train a class of raw young recruits at the Top Gun academy.

Of course, Top Gun 2 at IMAX amplifies all that human drama. But let’s not kid ourselves. You’re here for the stomach-flipping aerial action sequences, and the jaw-dropping IMAX technology that makes you feel every jolt, roll, dive and howl of hypersonic missiles.

Only ODEON IMAX makes movies this immersive – and Top Gun: Maverick might be the ultimate showcase for IMAX technology. Here’s why you’ll want to set your flight path to the ODEON IMAX box office on the Top Gun 2 release date of May 27th.

IMAX cinema visuals – why does Top Gun 2 at IMAX look so real?

Remember how the original Top Gun got your pulse racing back in 1986? That’s nothing compared to the danger zone that awaits you at ODEON IMAX on May 27th. The first thing you’ll notice is the biggest-ever, sharpest-quality cinema screen in the business. It covers the entire IMAX auditorium wall, so there’s no escaping the action, even if you wanted to.

With IMAX immersion, you’re no longer a cinema-goer on a Saturday afternoon. You’re a hungry young dogfighter, hurtling towards the horizon in an F-14 Tomcat, dodging a white-hot hail of hellfire. And that’s exactly how Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski planned it.

“Flying one of these fighter jets is an absolute thrill ride,” he explains. “We wanted to make sure the audience has the same experience.”

Is Top Gun 2 filmed in IMAX?

That’s one of the biggest departures when it comes to Top Gun 2’s revolutionary cinematography. “We worked with Sony to develop an IMAX-quality camera,” Joseph Kosinski told Collider. “It’s a 6K camera, so 6,000 pixels wide. It’s a large-format sensor, which is bigger than a 35mm sensor.”

Just as critical, as the director explained in the same interview, was that the cameras were kept small enough to capture first-hand action.

How IMAX allows audiences to see more picture than standard formats

“We were able to mount six of them inside the cockpit, and four on the outside of the airplane. We’re using technology to capture something real, rather than having to create it on a soundstage. So that, for me, was one of the things that I was excited about in jumping into the project in the first place.”

Add to that, when you watch Top Gun 2 at IMAX you’re literally experiencing a different movie. The Top Gun: Maverick IMAX release is digitally remastered to suit the format, so the sound and vision is made to measure for our sensory-enhancing auditoriums. The best of the best just got even better.

ODEON IMAX audio – how does Top Gun 2 at IMAX sound different?

Not many of us will get the chance to go supersonic in a F-14 Tomcat – but the closest thing to getting your wings is experiencing Top Gun 2 at IMAX.

We’ve talked about the visuals, but don’t discount the vital role of IMAX audio in the overall experience.

At our IMAX cinema, an unseen network of highly advanced speakers relays every sound from the movie with pin-drop accuracy.

IMAX audio can catch the most subtle moments, like the sigh of an ageing fighter ace who knows he’s drinking in the last-chance saloon.

But it can also suck the air out of your lungs with action scenes that feel like they’re unfolding around you.

An enemy MiG launches an air-to-air missile and you sense it shrieking inches above your canopy. A wingtip is riddled with bullets and you wince at the sound of punctured metal. A plane goes down in flames and you feel every shudder of the nosedive.

Only ODEON IMAX can do this – and hearing is believing.

Top Gun: Maverick at IMAX – what have the creators said about the IMAX format?

Since his early career, Joseph Kosinski has been an IMAX advocate.

The director once explained that “you really need to give people a reason to see something on the big screen” – and with Top Gun 2, he’s tapped all the possibilities of those next-generation audio-visuals.

As for the Cruiser, he wishes you’d watch all his action movies at IMAX. “I have a long history with IMAX,” says the star. “When you’re seeing it on that size of screen, with that perfect sound, it’s just a different experience.”

As producer of both the original 1986 Top Gun and this much-anticipated sequel, Jerry Bruckheimer is perhaps the best man to chart the quantum leap to IMAX.

“This movie is a love letter to aviation,” he explains.

“We’re gonna show you what it’s really like to be a Top Gun pilot. It’s amazing what we see in the cockpit – and what the audience is going to experience. An aviation film like this has never been done before – and chances are it will never be done again.”

What do the cast of Top Gun 2 say about the new film?
